Gu Wei is an award-winning Singaporean composer whose music has been described as having ‘warmth of real splendour…'. His music has been performed by ensembles including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Wind Symphony, The Philharmonic Winds among others.
As a composer, Gu Wei is fascinated by dialogues between disciplines, cultures, and social groups, and has collaborated with organizations including National Gallery Singapore, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Space Telescope Science Institute, and Asian Art Initiative. His musical explorations led him to perform on the toy piano, for which he has commissioned many contemporary works. He is also a student of Hindustani classical music and strives to immerse himself in different cultures in order to bring intercultural aspirations to his music.
Gu Wei graduated with a Doctor in Musical Arts degree in composition from the Peabody Institute of The John Hopkins University, where he was also appointed as the Graduate Assistant in Music Theory. His teachers include Kevin Puts, Oscar Bettison, David Smooke, Rob Keeley and Zechariah Goh.
