Dancing Trees (2020)

viola, 5'

Whenever I stroll around the city, I tend to imagine the trees around me as dancers. Like most of us, they are also city dwellers, and definitely indispensable ones for a “Garden City” like Singapore. For this piece, I was inspired by the greenery among Singapore’s urban landscape, and its relationship to our artificial concrete structures. The music is reflective of the trees’ undulating waves of motion, as they sway and dance gracefully to the rhythms of nature. A lot of natural harmonics are used here to symbolize nature, and as the piece unfolds, these harmonics are interrupted by normal notes. The interaction between these two sonic realms of harmonics and normal notes represent the relationship between nature and humankind, which strives towards a mutually respecting and complementing co-existence.
