If You Remember
SATB, 4'
(2022)
If You Remember is conceived in collaboration with artist Joanne Lim and written based on her painting, the water is never really blue. I am particularly drawn to Joanne’s choice of colours on the water lilies and how each lily pad has its unique colour. This colouristic richness is reflected in the piece through the variations of harmonic colour in each chord or each musical fragment. Some themes that we agreed on for this interdisciplinary collaboration include hope, childhood and memories. This piece takes the text from Sara Teasdale’s poem Water Lilies and attempts to evoke a sense that is both nostalgic and forward-looking; both reminiscent and hopeful.
