Metal and Fabric

for Piano and Percussion

Metal and Fabric represents two extremes of texture: one that is hard and rigid, and one that is soft and malleable. The beginning and ending represent the rigidity of the metallic texture, whereas the middle section represents the softness of fabric. Scored for piano and percussion, most of the sounds of the piece are also incidentally produced by the collision between metal and fabric: felt hammers on piano strings, as well as yarn mallets on vibraphone and gongs.

Performed by Gu Wei (piano) and Sandra Chang (percussion) at Peabody Institute
