Yellow-vented Bulbul (2022)

clarinet, 2'

The yellow-vented bulbul is a bird native to southeast Asia that is characterized by its assertive and flamboyant personality. It is a nomadic bird that is extremely adaptable in different kinds of environment, natural or urban. This piece is written based on some of its calls, notably the staccato and gradually-ascending distress call. As the piece is originally conceived in collaboration of a dancer, the bird calls are infused with a syncopated groove that also represents the urban environment where these birds are typically found.

Versions for saxophone and organ are also available.
